Items needed to make homemade colloidal silver water
There are a number of reasons to make your own colloidal silver, but the main one for most people is cost. A typical 4-oz. bottle of colloidal silver can cost around $30, but to make your own can end up costing only a few cents per quart. Once the initial outlay on a high quality colloidal silver generator is made, the only costs incurred thereafter will be the distilled water at around a dollar a gallon and around $25 every few years replacing the supply of pure silver wire. In fact once up and running, making silver colloidal at home can cost as little as 36 cents a quart.
Making your own colloidal silver also gives you more control over the purity and quality of the solution. Recent tests have shown that only around 43% of bottled colloidal silver actually contained the concentration listed on the label. Many products may also contain dyes, stabilizers, proteins or other additives. There is also no way of knowing the true particle size, even when listed on the label; as this is often an exaggerated or arbitrary figure.
To make colloidal silver yourself you will need: a colloidal silver generator, pure silver wire, distilled water and a brown glass jar or bottle for storage.
Colloidal silver generators can be made at home relatively simply. All that is needed is a small power supply or four 9 volt batteries, pure silver and a glass container. The optimal voltage for the reaction is 30 volts, however if using batteries it is best to start at 36 volts and let them run down.
Two strips of pure silver wire are then attached to the power supply, one to be positively charged and one negatively charged. The silver should then be suspended in distilled water contained in a wide mouthed glass jar or container. It is critical that the container is made of glass and not plastic, as plastic may create a static charge which could interfere with the ionization process.
While these basic homemade generators will produce colloidal silver, the end product will invariably be of a lower quality than that produced by one of the new high tech generators available today. This new breed of colloidal silver generator controls the timing, voltage level and the agitation of the water during all stages in the process to guarantee both consistent size and a correct concentration of silver particle in the final product.
It is vitally important to control the purity of the water as this is one of the main factors determining the particle size in the finished product. Only the highest quality distilled water is acceptable in the process. Spring and filtered water will still contain too many dissolved minerals that will interfere in the process, and deionized water does not conduct electricity sufficiently to start a reaction, so should also be avoided.
The other vital ingredient in the quality of the final product is the silver. Only pure elemental silver should be used to prevent impurities entering the solution. Most home producers of colloidal silver use 99.9% (0.999) pure silver in their product, however current literature states that 99.9999% (.9999) pure silver should be used. This ensures that no impurities at all enter the solution from the silver, and the purest possible product is produced.
Finally, it is important to preserve the quality of the final product by storing it correctly. Ultraviolet light and many plastics can strip the particles of their charge and lead to the re-coagulation of the particles. Colloidal silver is best stored, therefore, in dark glass containers. The two most suitable kinds of glass are dark amber and cobalt blue.
